Uncategorized » How To Plan To Sell Your Blog
It’s probably obvious to most bloggers but … most bloggers make very little from their blogs. Darren Rowse (ProBlogger.com) has done surveys that indicate to him that half of all his readers earn less than $100 per month from their blogs. And that is in a community devoted to blogging profit … imagine what the number would be in the whole blogosphere.
Most bloggers probably don’t think much about it. To them, it’s fun or it’s a hobby, or it’s a way to stay connected to friends or family.
But if you’re looking to build a blog you can sell, here are some tips to remember:
- The best blogs have a lot of personality. BUT - here’s Catch 22. If your blog is built around YOUR personality, it’s virtually unsellable. So you have to give your blog “3rd person” (he, she, it) personality, not “1st person” (I, me) personality. Develop the personality of your niche, not of YOU!
- The more passion in your niche, the easier it’ll be to sell your blog.
- Don’t compromise - publish really good content
- Constantly develop your ability to network and leverage contacts
- Constantly think of ways to brand your narrow blog focus in your market
- Read a lot of other blogs in your niche, and blogs that focus on making blogging profits.
- Get very, very good at building community - the more active your community, the more value your blog has
- Use other successful blogs as models for multiple revenue streams
- Watch your community members. Develop strong relationships with the most active members. Give them some kind of insider, special attention. They might be your eventual buyer or they might know your buyer. When you’re ready to sell, ask if they know anyone who might be interested.
- Check out sitepoint.com and other sites where blogs are placed for auction - use these as models for your own sale.Be sure to have stats for several months, including:
Be sure to always have stats for several months, including:
- What are your sources of revenue (Adsense, your own ads, etc.)?
- What does each one earn you per month (use screenshots as proof of earnings)?
- # of unique visitors (Proof: screenshots or access to your Google Analytics)
- Visitor demographics: age, gender, position, $$ they spend in your niche, etc.
- SE rankings for specific keywords
- Backlinks - who is important and links to you? Who else in your niche?
- Expenses
- Hours you spend on this blog
- Numbers about your niche that may increase your blog’s value
Plan every step along the way with the goal of selling your blog as your purpose, and you should find yourself in pretty good shape when the time comes to sell.
