Keyword Research I want to go beyond just describing keyword research and give a real life example of exactly how to go about selecting profitable keywords, so I decided to take 5 minutes and actually find a great keyword that will make me money. I will show you exactly how I did it. It’s easy and like I said it only took me about 5 minutes. Before I get into this I would just like to point out to the newbies that you need to do you keyword research before you start a blog. When I first started out I used to create a blog about a subject that I liked to write about and that I knew a lot about. Then i would try to find some keywords to work. If you are doing that right now I would urge you to reconsider because I believe you get better results the other way arround. Keyword research comes first not last. This is how you can decide if a niche is profitable or not. If a niche isn’t profitable then why work it? Take the make money online niche where almost all the ads are ten cent ads. Another thing I want to point out is that it’s OK to make an entire blog based on a single keyword. This is something a lot of noobs don’t get. When you see the cost per click I’m about to show you you’ll understand why I say the MMO niche has no money in it. Not only that but all the online marketers that actually make up the niche are jaded and savvy. They hardly ever click and when they do you get paid ten cents. Keyword Criteria I want a keyword that triggers a big money adsense ad. I also want this keyword to have relatively low competition. I also would like it to have about 2000 searches a month. What did I find in about 5 minutes? Have a look at what keyword elite was showing me:
I found ‘Boston personal injury lawyers’ to be an interesting choice. There were only 179 searches reported last month but those numbers come from Wordtracker which doesn’t count Googles search stats. Most people agree that you can take the search volume reported by Wordtracker and multiply it by 8 or 10 to account for the missing Google stats. So given that, this term, “Boston personal injury lawyers” could actually be searched somewhere between 1500 and 1800 times per month. This will keep me under the radar in case I can’t find a satisfactory pre owned domain and I have to go with a brand new dot com. With this tiny search volume I might completely avoid getting sandboxed by Google. You Saw What They Are Paying Per Click Right? $19-$24 per click. On the average you get anywhere from %20 to %50 of the cost per click. So we are looking at something like $9 to $14 per click. Do you think if I create a blog and get it to rank on page one for the term, “Boston personal injury lawyer” that I would be able to get at least 3 clicks per month? I would probably get a lot more than that especially if I were in position 1 or 2. Just three lousy clicks a month is all I ask as that would turn out to average around a dollar a day everyday. That’s all I need. Remember, these are very low maintenance sites. You do the work once and pretty much leave it alone. Maybe a post here and there once in a while but I pretty much just leave these little sites alone once the initial promotion is finished. Having said all that I really think that in position one or two I would have a lot more than 3 clicks a month! At $14 per click…do the math. What is the Competition Like? When I checked the serps in Google the top ranked site was a PR5 but the rest of the sites on page one were mostly PR3 and PR2. Infact, the number two spot was occupied by a PR2 with just a few links. I put this site in SEO Elite and checked out the backlinks and anchor text.
69 links showing and 8 links that show “Boston Personal Injury” as the anchor text. These 8 anchored links have a lot to do with why this site ( which is www.swartzlaw.com/) is ranked number two. Also notice the page titles that his links are coming from. They are relevant to his site. As a matter of fact he has quite a lot of directory links. Now think about this for a moment. Does it really seem impossible to outrank this little PR2 site with 69 links? With some work, this is completely doable. There just aren’t that many people out there working this keyword. It’s up for the taking. I have no problem with taking position two for this $14 per click keyword. All I need is 3 clicks per month to average a dollar a day and at position two I might get one click everyday. That would be over $300 per month. If you have 15 sites like that you are making $4500 per month! This is one good way to make money blogging. I can tell this much, I will have no readers and no successful relationships will be built. I will not get traffic from Stumble or Digg. I will not have .10 ads on this blog like you normally get on a “make money online” blog. See, there’s no money in that niche! Why do people try to become the next famous A-Lister? Why spend your time commenting on blogs all day trying to build credibility as an expert in the MMO niche? You should be doing your keyword research and analyzing the top sites. Then you should be getting links. It’s very simple. Just pick a good keyword that pays and if the competition isn’t too tough just get the links and go for it. When your links get counted you WILL rank and get targeted organic traffic with a need. You don’t get that kind of traffic from Stumble and Digg etc… If you want to make money blogging you just have to see what keywords are paying the big bucks and get the links ASAP. The next part of this “Make Money Blogging” series will deal with Site Promotion and Link Building .
