What is On Page Optimization?
On page optimization refers to anything you can do to your site to help google understand what your site is about. You are simply helping the search engine figure out what the content on your site is about. There are a few simple things you can do to keep google from being confused about your blog. Oh, and let’s make no mistake here…this business is about google. Not stumble or twitter, it’s about google.
Simple On Page Optimization Check List
1. This could really fall under off page optimization but, your URL should contain your main keyword if possible.
This is not crucial but it helps. It’s an added bonus. But if you can’t find a domain name with your containing your keyword do not despair. Just think about Wikipedia, as a
friend likes to remind me from time to time. Wikipedia ranks highly for everything and the URL sure isn’t helping. But if you can, then go for it and buy a domain containing your keyword.
Titles
2. Your titles should contain your keyword but in a varied way. For instance, say your keyword is “hoodia weight loss”. You could have titles like hoodia weight loss, hoodia weight loss pill, hoodia weight loss guide, guide to hoodia weight loss, diet pills and hoodia, weight loss and hoodia, facts about weight loss and hoodia…get the idea?
Google pays attention to the titles. This gives google a gist about what your blog is about. The bot kind of scans your site. That’s why…
Use Bold and Italics
3. Bold your keywords. You want to include your keyword phrase in your content People often ask me how many times a keyword should appear in a post. There is no hard and fast rule about this but if you analyze the top sites in various niches you will see varying amounts of keyword density. It also depends on the niche. If you are working “credit cards” and you keyword stuff your content you will probably get flagged. But if your niche is about “knitting” then you have a bit more leeway.
I think a good safe keyword density is about 4 percent. But again, if you analyze the top sites you will see that the density varies quite a bit.
h1 Tags
4. Put your keywords in ‘h1′ tags. When you break up your content with sub headings, put your keywords in the sub headings. Google values h1 tags highly.
Don’t Forget the Alt Image Tags
5. If you have images on your blog include your keyword in the alt image tags.
Keyword Stuffing
6. Have your keyword appear throughout your content but make sure it appears at both the beginning and the end of your post. Also include your keyword in the footer. Do not overdo this however, it can cause you to be penalized. Usually a keyword density of less than 4% is appropriate.
More Keyword Stuffing
7. Name your categories after the keyword and of course vary them like you did with the titles.
Content is an Important Long Term Factor
8. Provide useful content. It doesn’t need to be great content but just useful. Don’t just use instant article writer to produce a bunch of keyword laced junk content. Look, if your site gets flagged by a competitor as spam then you will need to pass a visual inspection.
I Hate Spam Sites and Spam Blogs
Now, I’m not advocating spam sites here. I’m not trying to teach you to create spam blogs. But sometimes in this business, when you start to be successful and rank for competitive terms, your competitors will do anything to knock you down. So in case you get flagged you’ll be happy knowing that your site actually has useful content on it…it will pass visual inspection. I consider this on page optimization because if you get flagged, and you drop suddenly from the serps, then you aren’t going to make any money. Protect yourself against this by laying down some valuable content.
Readers Don’t Just Show Up to Your Blog Because you Have Great Content!!
Don’t get the idea that your ‘valuable content’ is going to bring in the reader which in turn will make you money. That’s “A-Lister” nonsense. We just need real content to guard against being flagged. Remember, we are not going to do much in the way of maintenance with these blogs. We have to build them up just right so we can set them and ‘forget’ them.
Be Legit…Fill in Your About Page
9.Put something on your about page. Put a picture up of yourself or someone on your team. It doesn’t really matter who. Write something about yourself. Make it look good.
There’s More To it Than Just This Little Outline
We could really get into details here if we wanted to. We could talk about the effect that flash has on seo and how some urls are better than others…lets just keep it simple. We are going to build simple sites using the basic foundational techniques for optimization. Keep it simple.
None Of This Is Critical To Your Success In Ranking
Last thing I want to say before wrapping this post up is that none of this is critical. All of the on page optimization in the world wont help you rank number one without anchored links. Simple. As a matter of fact, if you had a blank page with nothing on it, maybe just a picture of yourself, and you went and got 20,000 links for “make money online” you would probably rank number one. On page optimization is important sure. But it is not critical. Links are critical. It’s just that a little keyword stuffing and proper use of the title tags helps you out a little bit especially when your site is new.
Coming Up
In the next post I will show you exactly how to go about researching and finding a great big money keyword. I still have a lot to cover including off page optimization, how to get links quickly, myths about what to do and not to do, how to increase meaningful traffic flow, how to analyze your stats to help you rank better, how not to monetize your blog, how to get the highest paying adsense ads on your blog, a list of the tools you’ll need to successfully manage your online network plus tips and tutorials on using the necessary tools of the trade and much more.
