Make Money Blogging Part 2 | What Not To Do

What Not to do if you Want to Make Money Blogging
As newbies begin the long journey of how to make money online or more specifically how to make money blogging, they usually find themselves learning about things like page rank, selling links on their blog, paid reviews and pushing ebooks on to their readers. There’s a ton of information on the net about how to make money blogging but the problem is that most of it is junk. Scammers teaching other people to be scammers or the uninformed telling others how to make money blogging.

Don’t Do Paid Reviews
One idea that almost every noob gets is to create a blog and work on the page rank. I think as we learn about how important links are and what page rank is, and then we see this blogger or that blogger selling links on his PR6 blog for big bucks, noobs get the idea that this is the way to make money online. Just beef up a blog to a PR5 or PR6 and sell links! Perfect. Simple enough plan even for a newbie. The problem is that this doesn’t work out so well as your blog will get penalized by google. They call it the “google slap”. You go to sleep one night with a PR6 blog that you spent 2 years working on and wake up to a PR1. This happened to a lot of people who were doing paid reviews.

For those that don’t know, a paid review is when you post a review on your blog for money. The idea is that inside the post you link to the advertisers site. You pass them some page rank this way. Google sees this as trying to manipulate search results and they will totally squash your page rank thus killing your business. Places like “Pay Per Post” and other paid review sites were really popular a few years ago but, since google has been aggressively slapping down those who participate in paid reviews they have become much less popular. Doing paid reviews, which is selling links (actually page rank) is not a solid foundation to build your online business. You’ll end up with no page rank. Not to mention all the time it takes to build your page rank will end up being just wasted time.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

Can you make money blogging with just one blog or site? Yes, it’s possible but highly unlikely especially for a newbie. There’s so much to learn about keyword selection and seo that it’s going to take forever for a newbie to start a new site and build it up untill it is profitable. There are so many ways to go wrong monetizing your site and not to mention sudden changes in the search engine algorithm which can send your only site on a downward spiral…and with it your income.

Diversify your income streams. It’s better to have many sites that feature different ways of generating income. Some sites based around adsense others based on affiliate products. When you have a large number of sites you can experiment without jeopardizing your entire income. Experimentation is an important part of the learning process but if all you have is one pretty little wordpress blog you could end up in a jam if you goof something up.

Don’t try to Build a Blogs Feedreader Count and try to Sell it.

This is scam material. There are a few notable “gurus” who advocate this business model yet it’s a total loser. These scammers build up a blogs page rank and feedreader count and then sell these worthless blogs for thousands of dollars to gullible newbies. Just look at “One Mans Goal”. This was a Brian Clark special. He sold this blog for ten thousand dollars. The buyer bought it hook line and sinker. After he purchased the blog he was left with a very disappointing income. Feed readers do not equal income. Page rank does not equal traffic. But the noobs don’t know that so scammers take advantage of them.

So forget about selling links on your blog as a serious way to make money blogging. Don’t trt to be the next “A-Lister” unless you are ok with waiting about 4 years to make any money. Now I know some of you might be thinking to yourself, “Hey, if the “A-Listers” are making big bucks every month they must know what they are talking about.” Some of you are thinking that it might be a good idea to try and duplicate what John Chow or Brian Clark are doing. Think again. Everybody wants to be the next “A-Lister”.

Don’t Mess With Pay Per Click!

Noobs have such a hard time with keyword selection and getting used to using online business software that it is unthinkable to suggest to a newbie to experiment with Pay Per Click. Yeah, you can make a killing with it but you can (and probably will) lose a ton of money learning the ins and outs of it. Unless you can make money online already and you know seo and how to market products you should just forget about dabbling with pay per click at the early stages of your online career. Besides, if you learn the fundamentals of seo and search engine marketing you don’t need pay per click to get traffic. Folks, forget about PPC right now unless you have money to burn.

In the next post in this series I will talk a little bit about how these so called “A-listers” make their money and why you may have a harder time with the same approaches. After that, I’ll get into the nuts and bolts of just exactly how to make money blogging and making money online in general.
