Social Marketing: How One Site Went From Zero To 550,000 visitors in 30 Days

No matter what fancy title you put on your boring article, it probably isn’t going to spread if there is no substance to it. My definition of viral content is very simple, it’s something you see (read) and instantly want to share with others.

This was a pretty interesting case study recently published by Glen Allsopp on his Reputation Management Blog. The client is a news source, one that has had a lot of stories go viral. Glen suggests some keys if you would like to make posts that go viral:

1. Find a model. Go to Digg and Fark and Reddit and read the titles on the homepage. Keep a swipe file of titles you think are really good … and which attract a lot of attention. Look at this swipe file on a regular basis and think how you can use elements of viral titles in your own blog posts. Don’t just rip off a title … but adapt titles to your own use, or maybe combine elements from 2 or more viral titles. If the title doesn’t command attention, your post has no chance of going around the world today.

2. Read Glen’s guide to building a powerful profile on StumbleUpon and other bookmarking sites. Or … build connections with people who already have a powerful profile. Just because a video or article or image is unforgettable or funny-as-heck doesn’t mean you have a slam-dunk viral post … unless it is submitted, or at least “OK’d” by a very powerful profile. So you need to be in position to get that done for the posts you create that have “viral” written all over them.

3. Be sure that you create other very good content for your blog. That “viral” post will only have a limited effect if it brings people to your site and they find nothing else. But if you have other excellent content, then they will find other stuff they want to bookmark and share with others … multiplying the viral effect of that 1st “power post.”
